Parent Led EIBI

Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention (EIBI) is a structured and comprehensive approach to therapeutic intervention designed for young children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This evidence-based early intervention strategy focuses on implementing intensive, one-on-one behavioural therapy to enhance social, communication, and adaptive skills during the critical developmental period of early childhood.

Key features of Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention include:

  1. Early Initiation: EIBI is typically initiated in children aged two to six, taking advantage of the brain’s heightened neuroplasticity during this developmental stage. Early intervention aims to address core deficits associated with ASD promptly.
  2. Behavioural Techniques: EIBI utilises applied behaviour analysis (ABA) techniques, breaking down desired skills into manageable components and teaching them systematically. Positive reinforcement is a central component, motivating and rewarding desirable behaviours to encourage their repetition.
  3. Intensive Structure: The intervention is characterised by a high level of intensity, often involving 25 to 40 hours of therapy per week. Sessions are usually conducted on a one-to-one basis, allowing for personalised attention to the individual needs of the child.
  4. Individualised Approach: EIBI recognises the unique strengths and challenges of each child with ASD. Intervention plans are tailored to the specific needs, preferences, and learning styles of the individual, fostering a personalised and adaptable learning environment.
  5. Targeted Areas of Development: EIBI addresses a broad spectrum of developmental domains, including language and communication skills, social interactions, self-help skills, and reduction of challenging behaviours. The ultimate goal is to improve the child’s overall functioning and independence.
  6. Parental Involvement: Successful EIBI often involves active participation from parents or caregivers. Training and involvement empower parents to reinforce learned skills in daily routines, promoting generalisation of skills outside of the therapy setting.

Research indicates that early initiation of EIBI can lead to significant improvements in the long-term outcomes for children with ASD. By systematically targeting core deficits and building a foundation of essential skills, Early Intensive Behavioural Intervention aims to enhance the developmental trajectory and improve the overall quality of life for children on the autism spectrum.
