What is behavioural assessment?
Behavioural assessment in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) involves systematically gathering information about an individual’s behaviour to understand its functions and guide intervention plans. Key components include:
- Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA): Identifying the purpose of behaviour by analysing antecedents, behaviours, and consequences.
- ABC Analysis: Breaking down behaviour into Antecedents, Behaviours, and Consequences to identify patterns.
- Direct Observation: Systematically recording behaviour in natural settings to understand patterns and triggers.
- Behavioural Interviews: Gathering insights from caregivers or relevant individuals to understand behaviour frequency and circumstances.
- Checklists and Rating Scales: Using standardised tools to collect structured data on behaviour frequency and severity.
- Record Review: Examining medical, educational, and other records to gain a comprehensive understanding of the individual’s history.
- Functional Analysis: Conducting controlled experiments to determine the function of a behaviour.
The information obtained guides the development of a behaviour intervention plan (BIP) aimed at teaching adaptive behaviours and reducing challenging behaviours. Continuous monitoring and adjustments ensure effective intervention and progress.
