What is Autism?

Autism, or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by a range of challenges in social interaction, communication, restrictive and repetitive behaviors. It is called a “spectrum” because it presents differently in each individual, with varying degrees of severity and a wide range of symptoms.

Some common characteristics of autism include difficulties in understanding and interpreting social cues, challenges in forming and maintaining relationships, delayed or atypical language development, repetitive behaviors or intense interests in specific topics, and a preference for routines and consistency.

Autism is typically diagnosed in early childhood, and its exact cause is not fully understood. It is believed to result from a combination of genetic and environmental factors. The diagnosis is made based on observed behavior and developmental history.

It’s important to note that each person with autism is unique, and their strengths and challenges can vary widely. Early intervention and various forms of therapy, such as applied behavioral therapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy, can help individuals with autism develop essential skills and improve their overall quality of life.
